Overall industrial production was unchanged in May after having decreased 0.4 percent in April. In May, manufacturing production rose 0.1 percent, and the output at mines (which includes oil and gas extraction as well as mining for raw materials) increased 0.7 percent. Gains in manufacturing and mining production were offset by a 1.8 percent decline in the output of utilities.

  • The output of business equipment gained 0.2 percent after falling by roughly the same amount in April.
  • The production of motor vehicles and parts increased by 0.8 percent in May after having fallen 0.4 percent in April.
