Housing starts eased in December but remained ahead of the year-earlier level. Total starts declined 8.9 percent from November to December, and single-family starts fell 7 percent during the same period. On a year-over-year basis, total starts rose 1.6 percent, and single-family starts increased 7.6 percent.
