The Institute for Supply Management's (ISM) manufacturing index declined in January compared with December, but it still indicated expansion for the eighth consecutive month. The new orders subindex plummeted, experiencing its largest drop since December 1980. Many analysts suggest that unseasonably severe winter weather played a role in the January decline.
