There were 697,000 discouraged workers (those not in the labor force who want a job yet are not actively looking) in May, a decrease of 86,000 from April. The number of long-term unemployed (those looking for work for 27 weeks or more) declined by 78,000 in May to slightly below 3.4 million. Though the long-term unemployed are trending down, the number remains much higher than it was prior to the recession. The number of people working part time for economic reasons was down 196,000 (to 7.3 million) in May from April and 650,000 from May 2013.
