For release September 7, 1995

The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta will host a two-day conference titled "Sports & Entertainment: Economic Development Boon or Boondoggle?" on September 14 and 15, 1995. The conference will focus on the fundamental question underlying economic development initiatives based on sports, casinos, and entertainment: Are they vital catalysts to growth, or do they impose burdens on local taxpayers while private organizations reap most of the gains?

This topic promises lively debate among sports and entertainment industry executives, economic development specialists, and scholars participating in the program. Maynard H. Jackson, former mayor of the City of Atlanta and Sherman R. Day, managing director for legacy for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, will lead off the program with presentations on The Legacy of the Olympics for Atlanta and the Southeast. Calvin Hill, executive sports consultant and former all-pro running back for the Dallas Cowboys, will speak on the business of sports at Thursday's luncheon.
