John Branigin has been named vice president in the Retail Payments Office (RPO) of the Federal Reserve System, announced Jack Guynn, president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. Guynn also announced that Pierce Nelson has been named assistant vice president and public information officer for the Atlanta Fed.
In his new position, Branigin retains primary responsibility for software development for the Federal Reserve System’s RPO check standardization project. He began his career at the Atlanta Fed in September 1987 as a programmer analyst in the systems department. He became a senior systems analyst in June 1989 and an application development project manager in May 1993.
Branigin was promoted to assistant vice president in July 1997 and in January 2000 transferred to the RPO, where he assumed his current responsibilities. Branigin holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Davidson College in Davidson, N.C., and completed the executive development program at Cornell University.
Nelson, in his new position, is responsible for media relations, speeches, publications, economic education and conferences. He joined the Bank as public information manager in June 1997 and became public information director in April 1999. He holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Georgia State University.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta serves the Sixth Federal Reserve District, which encompasses Alabama, Florida, Georgia and sections of Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. As part of the nation’s central banking system, the Atlanta Fed participates in setting national monetary policy, supervises numerous commercial banks and provides a variety of financial services to depository institutions and the U.S. government.
