David Tatum has been promoted to vice president in the supervision and regulation division at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, announced Patrick K. Barron, first vice president and chief operating officer of the Atlanta Fed. Barron also announced that Maria Smith has been promoted to assistant vice president in the supervision and regulation division.

Tatum assumes responsibility for the administrative, business continuity, professional development and applications functions of the supervision and regulation division, as well as administrative responsibility for the division's ongoing process improvement program. He first worked at the Atlanta Fed from 1972 to 1979 in the supervision and regulation division. In 2001, he rejoined the Atlanta Fed as a senior examiner. He was promoted to assistant vice present in 2002 with responsibility for administration. Most recently, from 2004 until 2007, he was responsible for the supervision of the District's large banking organizations.

Tatum previously served as vice president of product management for electronic commerce products at Checkfree Corp., as an independent banking consultant, and in executive positions at Citizens and Southern National Bank, NationsBank and Bank South.

Tatum is a former member of the Atlanta Downtown Partnership Board, where he has served as president and chairman. He also served on the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce's Partnership of Education and Business Advisory Board and the Board of the Academy Theater. In addition, he is a graduate of the Leadership Atlanta program. Tatum received a bachelor of arts degree in economics from the University of Virginia and earned an MBA in finance at Georgia State University. He is also a graduate of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking.

Smith serves as an assistant vice president in the supervision and regulation division's large bank group. She joined the Bank in 1992 as an examiner and during her career has held positions of increasing responsibility. Before moving to the Bank's Atlanta office through this promotion, she served as director of international supervision in the Bank's Miami Branch, where she oversaw foreign banking operations in the Sixth District.

Smith is a member of the System-level International Course Committee and of the supervision and regulation division's risk committee. She earned a degree in finance from Florida International University.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta serves the Sixth Federal Reserve District, which encompasses Alabama, Florida, Georgia and sections of Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. As part of the nation's central banking system, the Atlanta Fed participates in setting national monetary policy, supervises numerous commercial banks and provides a variety of financial services to depository institutions and the U.S. government.
