ATLANTA—Dennis Lockhart, president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, today announced that David E. Altig will become senior vice president and director of research of the Atlanta Fed. His start date is being determined. Altig currently serves as vice president and associate director of research at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.

In his role at the Atlanta Fed, Altig will have responsibility for advising the Bank's president on monetary policy and related economic issues. In addition, he will direct the work of the Bank's research, public affairs and financial statistics and structure analysis departments. He also will serve as a member of the Bank's management committee and discount committee.

"David Altig is an experienced and well-respected macroeconomist," Lockhart said. "Through his work at the Cleveland Fed and in academia, he has earned a strong reputation in the areas of monetary policy, fiscal policy and international economic research. I believe he will do an excellent job building on the Bank's strong research foundation, and I look forward to his counsel on the monetary and economic policy contributions from our Reserve Bank."

Altig's research is widely published in publications ranging from the American Economic Review to the Journal of Money, Credit and Banking and the Journal of Monetary Economics. He also has served as editor of several conference volumes on a wide range of macroeconomic and monetary-economic topics. In addition to his responsibilities at the Cleveland Fed, he currently serves as an adjunct professor of business economics in the graduate school of business at the University of Chicago, the Fisher School of Business at Ohio State University, and the Chinese Executive MBA program sponsored by the University of Minnesota and Lingnan College of Sun Yat-Sen University. He plans to retain his relationships with the University of Chicago and the University of Minnesota. He has lectured at numerous institutions, including Brown University, Duke University, the University of Iowa and Cleveland State University.

Altig joined the Cleveland Fed in 1991 as an economist and was promoted to his current position in 1997. Prior to joining the Cleveland Fed, he served as an assistant professor of business economics and public policy at Indiana University from 1986 to 1991. He received his bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Iowa and his master's and doctoral degrees in economics from Brown University.

The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta serves the Sixth Federal Reserve District, which encompasses Alabama, Florida, Georgia and parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. As part of the nation's central banking system, the Atlanta Fed participates in setting national monetary policy, supervises numerous commercial banks and provides a variety of financial services.
