Michael Bryan has been named vice president and economist in the research department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, announced Dennis P. Lockhart, president and chief executive officer of the Atlanta Fed. Bryan will be responsible for directing the economic briefing process in support of the Bank's monetary policy contributions. He will assume his new duties on Sept. 1, 2008.
Bryan previously served as vice president in the research department at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, where he specialized in business analysis. He joined the Cleveland Fed as a bank examiner in 1978 and transferred to the research department the next year. In 1986, Bryan served as an economist in the research division of the Federal Reserve System's Board of Governors in Washington, D.C. At the Cleveland Fed, he was promoted to economic adviser in 1991 and bank officer in 1995.
In 1998, Bryan was a visiting scholar at the Bank of Japan's Institute for Monetary and Economic Studies in Tokyo, and in 2000 he was a visiting economist at the Swedish Riksbank in Stockholm. Bryan currently teaches at the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago. He has taught in the department of economics at Cleveland State University and served on the faculties of Kent State University, Cleveland's Baldwin-Wallace College and Case Western Reserve University.
A native of Cleveland, Bryan earned a bachelor's degree in business from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and a master's degree in economics from Case Western Reserve University.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta serves the Sixth Federal Reserve District, which encompasses Alabama, Florida, Georgia and sections of Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. As part of the nation's central banking system, the Atlanta Fed participates in setting national monetary policy, supervises numerous commercial banks and provides a variety of financial services to depository institutions and the U.S. government.
