In terms of economic ascent, China is without peer. The country has transformed itself from an economy still largely isolated from the outside world (top, Beijing, 1925) to a modern incarnation as an economic powerhouse and a key cog in the global economy. But even China has been slowed by financial turbulence in 2008.
