The Atlanta Fed's Center for Financial Innovation and Stability and Georgia State University's Center for the Economic Analysis of Risk are organizing a workshop titled Improving Financial Regulation for an Evolving Environment. We will hold the conference in person at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta on October 30–31, 2025. The workshop's goal is to bring together economists, finance and risk management professionals, and regulators to consider the micro and macroprudential issues and capital formation issues associated with the evolving financial system.
The financial supervisory and regulatory environment is being challenged on a variety of fronts. Some of these challenges arise from longstanding debates about appropriate policy, such as those related to the optimal prudential supervision regulation of financial institutions in areas including liquidity and capital adequacy and the role of securities regulation in facilitating capital formation. Other challenges arise from recent developments in technology such as the development of digital (for example, blockchain) assets and artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML). Still others arise from the evolving environment, such as the growing strains in the US Treasuries market and the rise of alternative financial services providers (such as fintech firms and private credit). This conference will focus on how financial supervisors and regulators can best respond to both longstanding and relatively new challenges to achieve financial stability while continuing to support the real economy's need for financial services.
We invite academics, professionals, and regulators to submit papers and/or ideas for panel discussions for this workshop. Long abstracts or, preferably, complete manuscripts may be submitted no later August 1, 2025, on the full range of issues associated with regulating the evolving structure of the financial services industry including but not limited to:
- The impact of financial regulation in the evolving financial landscape, including capital, incentive compensation, and liquidity regulation.
- The role of regulation in addressing the impact of nonbank financial firms on financial stability as well as the contribution of nonbanks to capital formation.
- The impact of recent financial technologies, including AI/ML on financial market outcomes, financial stability, and central bank communications.
- The role of regulation in managing both the risks and potential contribution of digital assets hosted on blockchains.
Panel proposals, completed papers, and long abstracts should be submitted here: https://gsu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_204fEqXrhvdmCN0
The results of the selection process will be sent by September 1. For presenters of accepted papers, reasonable travel and accommodation expenses will be covered. Please email Larry Wall at lwall7@gsu.edu with inquiries.
