| Goldsmiths were able to start lending money Since not all deposited valuables were ever withdrawn at one time, goldsmiths could start lending claims. These borrowed claims too could be transferred by means of a message to pay. Merchants accepted these borrowed claims—transferred by messages—as payment. This system set the pattern for banking. |
