Massachusetts decided to mint its own coins
The first coins were produced in 1652, without the Crown’s authorization. These coins were crude and easy to counterfeit. They were soon followed by the more elaborate willow tree, oak tree, and pine tree designs shown here. Although the three designs were produced for 30 years, they all bore the original 1652 date.
