Steven J. Davis, professor, University of Chicago
Michelle Miller-Adams, senior researcher, Upjohn Institute
Harry Holzer, professor, Georgetown University, and former chief economist, U.S. Department of Labor

Research for Equity in Recovery II: Place-based Strategies
Thursday, July 16, Noon–1 p.m. ET

How can we allocate resources to ensure that pandemic recovery includes all local economies, including distressed areas? Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, many local areas lacked sufficient jobs, while jobs boomed in a few high-tech areas on the coasts. The pandemic is likely to worsen these trends. Distressed areas will be further damaged, and additional areas will be pushed into labor market distress. A full recovery from the pandemic must lift up all of America’s communities. The panelists will discuss how to help spread both overall growth and high-tech growth more broadly across America’s communities as we recover from the pandemic. The speakers are:

Timothy J. Bartik, senior economist, Upjohn Institute
Simon Johnson, professor, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Mark Muro, senior fellow and policy director, Brookings Institution (invited)
Moderator: Susan Wachter, codirector, Penn Institute for Urban Research, University of Pennsylvania

Research for Equity in Recovery III: Small Businesses
Thursday, July 30, Noon–1 p.m. ET
Register Here

This session will focus on how COVID-19 has affected small businesses across sectors, firm sizes, and geography, as well as how small businesses and local communities can advance policies and programs, such as the Paycheck Protection Program, that can promote an equitable recovery. Maurice A. Jones, president and CEO of Local Initiatives Support Corporation, will speak at this event. Other speakers are being confirmed.
